Jamaica’s Unbeaten ‘Axeman’ in Texas for Featherweight Showdown
Unbeaten WBA featherweight champion Nicholas ‘Axeman’ Walters and his challenger Alberto Garza squared off on Sunday at the Corpus Christi International Airport upon their arrival for their battle on Saturday at the American Bank Center.
Walters, who won the WBA Featherweight belt last December in front of his home crowd in Jamaica beating the Mexican Dauliss Prescott, arrived with his team of trainer Celso Chavez, coordinator Patrick Buteau, and his father Job Walters.
The Mexican Garza came in with his team which included Victor Alfaro, Jesus Garza, and Hector Garcia.
The Walters-Garza world title bout will be televised on Top Rank’s international telecast.
Walters enters the contest with a 22-0 record with 18 knockouts, while Garza is 25-5 and 1 with 20 knockouts.
Their contest is part of a triple championship night of boxing as HBO will be televising the fight between undefeated Miguel Angel Garcia and Puerto Rican favourite Roman Martinez for the WBO Super Featherweight title and Vanes Martirosyan taking on Demetrius Andrade for the vacant WBO Light Middleweight championship.
Also on the bill will be Nonito Donaire who will return to the ring against Vic Darchinyan in a ten round feature bout.
