Empty Youths

Oh wow ‘another party advertisement comes up on my television, on my computer, radio and in my hand as I make my way up and down the school campus. Placed in the back of their heads are the once thought of dreams of becoming a lawyer, doctor, teacher or even a police man/ woman.

The young man today has dreams of just simply becoming accomplished by having a couple of dollars in his pocket and a car with shiny rims. That’s success to the average man these days. Spending money on several parties is not considered wasting money to them but spending say $130 to arrive at school is simply too much of an expense.

Getting the latest brand in clothing and phones is a must and if you don’t have you are frowned upon. These are the minds that are forming the new norms of our country. Less is more continues to be the slogan for our females as they make their way to these parties. Some will go to hell and beyond just to get attention from a man who will more or less forget their names the next day.

Then again when I sat and watched the awards ceremony for our young people and saw some of the attires of the young female athletes who are seen as role models wearing rather revealing outfits it’s not hard to understand why females gravitate to wearing these outfits. Mixed signals are given by dance hall artists as well as they push this manifesto that education is the key and take up your book’ yet they speak about careless living and send messes that see women as mere sexual objects. It’s hard to expect that young people will just fall into place when so much negativity is bursting into their ears each and every day.

With developing minds it’s only natural they become vulnerable and once they have given into these sexual thoughts and less on the importance of education how does one suddenly transform them overnight to be the model citizens that are needed to bring Jamaica to better days.
