Why on Earth Are So Many Jamaicans Taking Loans to Attend Parties?

I recently read a Gleaner article where Founder and CEO of Sprint Financial Services Limited, Christopher Barrett stated that upwards of $2.5 million (still tallying) in loans were disbursed to partygoers, a whopping 56 per cent increase from last year.

He also mentioned that is mostly females who are taking these loans.

The company offers loans to partygoers who find it difficult to foot the upfront cost for armbands, hotel accommodations, transportation and other miscellaneous expenses.

“On average, we disburse $30,000 per person for a loan. The funds are then reimbursed through salary deductions, and 50 per cent of our clients have opted to use guarantors in order to secure loans. On average, it takes about four months for individuals to repay, but the longest time allotted for a loan to be repaid in full is eight months,” the article also stated.

Now questions have to be answered. What really are the priorities of many of our Jamaicans?

Are they prioritizing for food, jobs, and the education of their children?

It seems many prefer to spend money they do not have on dances, stage shows, and a ‘Dream Weekend’.

A weekend which saw many of these same Jamaicans bawling about how this government has them under sufferation.

They claim to be suffering yet they are more than willing to borrow up to $30,000.00 to go to a party?

Seriously? So the government is supposed to be the one to fund your kids education while you take out a loan to gallivant in your bikini, and party?

From the Dancehall scene to the have to party scene, what exactly are the priorities of Jamaicans, especially the WOMEN who are supposed to be the mothers and nurturers of our society?

Now I am in no way shape or form a prude, but do I really need to take out a $30,000.00 loan just to attend a three day party and then cry bloody hell when I cannot find money for food and other essentials?

Well I guess under the PNP Jamaicans are flourishing, and will flourish even more under the JLP’s slogan of FROM POVERTY to PROSPERITY. SMDH
