Massive turnout for Mario Deane’s Funeral

It was a massive turnout of persons today (September 21) for the funeral of Mario Deane.

The 31 year old construction worker died in hospital after he was beaten while in the custody of the Barnett Street police for possession of a ganja ‘spliff’.

According to a report by Loop Jamaica, several mourners and well wishers began filing into the Mt Salem Seventh Day Adventist Church from as early as 9 am today to pay their last respects to Deane.

A sombre and solemn mood prevailed as persons patiently waited to view the body and sign the condolence book.

Among the high profile persons in attendance were Jasmine Rand – the US attorney who was involved in the case of Trayvon Martin, the Florida teen who was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman – and Deputy House speaker Lloyd B Smith.

Deane died on Independence Day, after suffering a brutal mauling while inside the Barnett Street police station three days earlier.

He was arrested for a ganja spliff and, after meeting bail requirements, was refused bail by a female cop who he had expressed his dislike for.

Two inmates, Marvin Orr and Adrian Morgan, have since been charged in connection with Deane’s death.

Five cops who were on duty at the time have been suspended.

The matter is being probed by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).
