Jamaica’s Usain Bolt is a nominee for the Jessie Owens International Athlete Trophy


Usain Bolt Lionel MessiJessie Owens International Athlete TrophyThe International Athletic Association, one of the leading athletic organizations providing recognition and support to professional and amateur athletes, announced that Bolt is among three track & field stars nominated for the award along with Britain’s Mo Farah and Liu Xiang of China.

Outside of track and field, the other nominees are golfer Tiger Woods, tennis star Serena Williams, swimming sensation Michael Phelps, speed skater Apolo Ohno, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi, Miami Heat star Lebron James and cross skier Marit Bjoergen of Norway.

The Jessie Owens Award is presented annually to one world class athlete based on their values of integrity, uncompromised sportsmanship, and excellence in athletic competition. It was created in 1981 in honour of the celebrated track and field star Jesse Owens.

Owens famously made history as an athlete and activist in 1936 winning four gold medals at the Berlin Olympic Games.
