Greenwood Fires Marseille to Victory and Matches Dembele as Ligue 1 Joint-Top Scorer
Mason Greenwood wrapped up his sensational debut Ligue 1 season in style, netting twice in Marseille’s thrilling 4-2 win over Rennes on Saturday evening.
His brace brought him level with Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele on 21 league goals, crowning both as the top scorers in France’s top flight—though Dembele will officially take the title due to having fewer penalties.
The English striker, who found the net seven times from the spot compared to Dembele’s one, still walked away with major accolades.
His 21 goals not only made him joint-top scorer but also the most prolific debutant for Marseille in the 21st century, eclipsing Bafetimbi Gomis (20) and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba (19).
Only Croatian striker Alen Boksic has scored more in a debut Ligue 1 season for Marseille, with 22 goals back in 1992-93.
Greenwood’s red-hot form has sparked transfer interest from several major European clubs, including Barcelona.
However, the 22-year-old has confirmed he’s staying put at the Stade Velodrome to savour Champions League football next season after helping Marseille secure second place behind PSG.
