Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Jamaica as Potential Tropical Cyclone 18 Nears
The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has issued a Tropical Storm Warning as Potential Tropical Cyclone Number 18 intensifies over the west-central Caribbean Sea, posing a potential threat to the island within the next 36 hours.
The system, located about 420 kilometres (260 miles) south of Kingston as of 5:00 a.m., is moving north at 11 km/h (7 mph) and could develop into a tropical storm later today, with further strengthening possible as it nears the Cayman Islands.
Forecasts indicate that the disturbance will approach Jamaica by late Monday evening or early Tuesday, bringing heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and the risk of landslides, especially in eastern and southern parishes.
In marine areas, strong winds up to tropical storm force, widespread showers, and thunderstorms are expected, particularly along the south coast.
Small craft operators and fishers in coastal zones have been advised to remain in port and complete all necessary safety precautions.
Residents are urged to monitor updates from the Meteorological Service for further information.
