Jamaica’s Unemployment Rate Declines to 4.2%

Jamaica’s unemployment rate has fallen to 4.2%, according to the latest revised labour force survey from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) for April 2024.

This represents a significant decrease from the 5.4% recorded in January 2024.

The survey revealed that there were 62,800 unemployed persons during the review period, with females accounting for the majority of the unemployed population.

Meanwhile, youth unemployment stood at 14.8%, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by younger individuals in securing employment.

The data also indicated that there were 672,700 individuals outside the labour force. Of this number, 3.5% were classified as part of the potential labour force.

This group includes individuals who are seeking employment but are not available to work, as well as those who are available for work but are not currently searching for a job.

This report provides insight into the dynamics of the Jamaican labour market as of April 2024, with continued focus on reducing unemployment, particularly among youth.
