US Senate Confirms Jamaican-American as Federal Judge

On Wednesday, Charles “Chuck” Schumer, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate, announced that the confirmation of a Jamaican-American to serve as a district judge on the esteemed United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York has been completed.

Schumer expressed that he had recommended Orelia Merchant, a Bronx native and Brooklyn resident who is the daughter of a first-generation Jamaican-American, to the Biden administration and had advocated for her nomination.

Merchant is part of one of the most diverse groups of judicial nominees selected by the Biden administration.

With a vote of 51 to 48, the Senate confirmed Merchant’s appointment, with US Senator Lindsey Graham being the only member of the Republican Party to vote in her favour, serving as the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee.
