West Indies Ease To Test Series Success Over Bangladesh
Unbeaten run is extended to three matches on home turf under captain Kraigg Brathwaite
Bajans Kyle Mayers and Kemar Roach made it a memorable 2-0 Test series sweep over Bangladesh in St. Lucia, following a 10-wicket win for the West Indies.
Skipper Kraigg Brathwaite, who joined Jamaican opener John Campbell to score the handful of runs yesterday (27 June), was delighted to make it a hat-trick of home Test wins this year. With the Windies having defeated England in Grenada in March. Mayers, the all rounder who bats left-handed but bowls with his right, was red hot at the crease with a knock of 146. The Windies bagged an impressive 408 first innings total in response to the tourists’ paltry 234.
Roach reached his milestone 250th Test wicket in the second innings, Tamim Iqbal opener cheaply caught behind by Joshua De Silva. He then added the scalps of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Anamul Haque as Bangladesh stuttered to 32-3. Roach elevated himself to the sixth-highest Test wicket taker for the Windies. However, it appears mission impossible for the 33-year-old to surpass top spot. Courtney Walsh, Jamaica’s former captain of the West Indies, heads the list with 519 wickets from 132 Test matches.
Bangladesh battled back from their initial struggles, but at stumps on Sunday still trailed the hosts by 42 runs at 132-6.
With the West Indies having dominated the 1st Test in Antigua to reel off an emphatic seven-wicket success, they confidently maintained their momentum inside the Daren Sammy Stadium.
Bangladesh were bundled out for 186 runs. Braithwaite and Campbell easily wrapped up victory to reach the low target of 13 runs to register a comfortable ten-wicket triumph.
West Indies’ Test series whitewash keeps them in the mix for next year’s World Test Championship final. Their fourth Test success in the current campaign leaves the Caribbean team in sixth place. They will get an opportunity to move higher up the standings this year with a tour Down Under to face Australia.
Jubilant Braithwaite said: “There is always room for improvement, but it was good to see the way we fought.
“It’s especially pleasing to see our plans coming to fruition. We know it’s going to be very tough for our next Test series in Australia at the end of the year.”
