Ex-Manchester United Player Shows Interest In Ailing Reggae Boyz

Demetri Mitchell, the exciting English-born left back, believes that his move to the Scottish Premiership could propel him to a call-up from Jamaica.

The 25-year-old, who signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Hibernian during the January transfer window, joins the top flight from English Championship side Blackpool.

Mitchell kicked off his youth career at Fletcher justifyMoss Rangers FC in his home city of Manchester, where England superstar Marcus Rashford also started. He spent a decade with the youth team at mighty Manchester United, but only made two Premier League appearances for the Red Devils – albeit one as an unused substitute.

He enjoyed a couple of loan spells on loan at Scottish outfit Hearts, which were both curtailed by a knee injury. After being released by Manchester United Mitchell signed for Blackpool in 2020, where he also utilised as a winger, and helped them win promotion to the second tier.

Mitchell, capped for England youth teams (Under-16 through to Under-20), revealed to the Hibernian website: “I have got aspirations, of course I want to play at the highest level possible and I have come here to do that.

“I also have aspirations to play for Jamaica. I have got heritage there, my grandparents are Jamaican, so that is an aspiration of mine as well. To get a call-up would be a massive, massive thing for me.”

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz, who are suffering a dismal CONCACAF World Cup qualifying campaign, have their final three qualifiers in March. Recently-installed head coach Paul Hall, who is in temporary charge, has the opportunity to introduce new faces for games against Canada, El Salvador and Honduras as the nation focuses on building for the future.
