I Gave Away The Race Away Says Gatlin After Defeat to Bolt

Following his defeat to Usain Bolt in the final of the men’s 100 metres at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China on Sunday, American sprinter Justin Gatlin stated he  ‘gave the race away’.

The race, easily the most anticipated of 2015 saw Gatlin say goodbye to his nearly two year unbeaten streak.

With a time of 9.79 seconds, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt edged Gatlin for gold by 1/100th of a second who clocked 9.80 seconds to earn himself the silver medal.

According to the Gleaner, Gatlin stated:

“At the end of the day, I guess I can say I gave the race away at the last five metres. The momentum, I was leaning forward and I stumbled going across the finish line, but I’m happy to be in the race, happy it came so close, and happy to represent my country,”

The American sprinter also denied suggestions that it was pressure from Bolt that caused him to lose his form late in the race.

“Pressure? No. I have had pressure since 2011, so it’s not the pressure. It’s just to come and run, and the last five metres; it wasn’t my day today,” he also said.
