Almost 50 Per Cent of Jamaica’s Youth Willing to Renounce Citizenship!
Almost fifty per cent of Jamaica’s youth would be willing to do away with their citizenship to gain residence in another country, according to a survey commissioned by the Centre for Leadership and Governance (CLG) at the University of the West Indies.
The National Youth Values and Attitudes Survey conducted in April last year by the Centre for Leadership and Governance (CLG) at UWI stated that 43.2 per cent of respondents below 18 said that they would be willing to relinquish their Jamaican citizenship and nearly half the number of young adults (49.3 per cent) indicated that they would.
According to a release from the university, the survey targeted 1000 Jamaican youths between the ages of 14 and 25, from a total youth population of 627,026 across all fourteen parishes.
CLG Director and Department of Government Head, Dr Lloyd Waller along with UWI Academics Nicole Satchell and Gavin Daley who conducted the survey noted that, “young people…do not believe that the current economy can provide effectively for their development. Further, they believe that greater investment is needed to create jobs and the structures necessary to facilitate development at the national and community levels.”

People who think living in another country is better, better think again. Unemployment is worldwide. Unless you have a skill and willing to work HARD; don’t even think about it. Jamaica is warm all year round. Live in a country where there is about 2 months of summer; no job, and no place to live. America is named the greatest country in the world. Take a trip to NY in winter. Ride the subways; see the homeless; visit the soup kitchens; then do the survey. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side. I wish every one well.
