Poverty continues to rise in Jamaica according to survery
According to RJR News, the latest Survey of Living Conditions shows an increase in poverty and says some of the poorest Jamaicans are not turning to the government for help.
The findings of the 2012 survey were released on Friday by the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).
The survey showed one out of every five Jamaicans lived in poverty.
The data looked at poverty by parish for the first time since 2008…and the four year gap showed significant changes.
Ten of the 14 parishes recorded increases in poverty. St. Catherine which in 2008 had the least number of poor people or 7.5 percent saw the figure increase to 24 percent in 2012.
St. Mary, which in 2008 was the parish with the second largest number of poor people now has the lowest poverty rate.
One out of every 10 people in the parish was poor in 2012 compared to 1 in every five in 2008.
