Jamaica’s police investigators have recorded major gains in solving homicide cases this year, with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) reporting a murder clearance rate of 111% between January 1 and July 4.

The figure reflects the resolution of both recent and long-standing investigations, as detectives cleared 304 murder cases during the period despite 275 murders being recorded nationwide.

The JCF said many of the breakthroughs involved older files. In total, 192 murders committed in previous years were solved, including at least two cold cases dating back to 2007. More than half of those historical clearances, 107 cases or 55.7%, related to murders committed in 2024 and 2025.

Among the 304 murder cases cleared, 159 resulted in arrests, while 148 were cleared after suspects died before they could face prosecution. Overall, 162 solved murders were classified as posthumous clearances.

Investigative improvements were reported across all five police areas. Area 2 posted the strongest increase in murder clearances, rising 55% compared with the corresponding period last year. Area 5 followed with a 28% increase, while Areas 3, 1 and 4 recorded gains of 26%, 17% and 7%, respectively.

The JCF also reported strong divisional performances, noting that 15 of its 19 police divisions achieved both their current and previous-year murder clearance targets. Of those divisions, 13 exceeded both benchmarks.

The force said the improved investigative results coincided with continued reductions in serious crime across the island. Shootings declined by 27%, robberies dropped 25%, while reported rapes and break-ins each fell by 10%. Overall, category one crimes were down 15%, representing 322 fewer major offences than during the same period last year.

While detectives solved more murder cases, the number of homicides also continued to decline. Jamaica recorded 275 murders between January 1 and July 4, compared with 335 during the corresponding period in 2025, a reduction of 23%.

The latest figures also show a significant improvement over last year in murder case resolution. During the same period in 2025, investigators cleared 253 murder cases, meaning this year’s total increased by 51 cases, or 20%, while the murder clearance rate climbed from 71% to 111%.
