Tina Clayton Leads Jamaican 1-2-3 Finish in Rabat Sprint Showdown

Jamaica’s female sprinters delivered one of the most dominant performances of the Diamond League season on Sunday after securing a remarkable clean sweep of the women’s 100 metres in Rabat, Morocco.

Lavanya Williams’ personal best performance, Jonielle Smith’s podium finish and Tina Clayton’s victory combined to ensure Jamaica occupied all three medal positions in the event.

Williams continued her impressive breakthrough campaign by producing a lifetime best 10.95 seconds in her first-ever Diamond League appearance. The young sprinter finished second behind fellow Jamaican Tina Clayton and ahead of another compatriot, Jonielle Smith, who stopped the clock at 11.00 seconds.

The victory belonged to Clayton, whose season’s best 10.85 seconds was the third-fastest time recorded in the world this year. The mark also made her the second-fastest Jamaican woman over 100 metres this season, trailing only Shanese Walker’s 10.80.

Following her triumph, Clayton indicated that she was encouraged by the result and believed the performance demonstrated that her season was moving in the right direction. The World Championships silver medallist acknowledged the challenge of competing against elite opposition and stressed that remaining healthy while continuing to improve remained her primary objective.

Williams was equally pleased after producing the fastest time of her career on one of athletics’ biggest stages. The Jamaican youngster said she was satisfied with her race execution and felt there was still more improvement to come. She added that training had been progressing well and that she was continuing to learn how to maximise every phase of the sprint.

Both athletes also praised the atmosphere created by spectators in Rabat.

The Jamaican sweep stood out as one of the headline performances of the meeting and further highlighted the country’s strength in the women’s sprint events.

Elsewhere at the meet, Rushell Clayton secured another podium finish for Jamaica after placing third in the women’s 400m hurdles in 53.75 seconds. Andrenette Knight finished ninth in the same event with 55.37.

Shericka Jackson did not compete in the women’s 200 metres, which was won by American Cambrea Sturgis in 22.21 seconds.

Lamara Distin placed fifth in the women’s high jump with a best clearance of 1.91 metres, while Kerrica Hill finished ninth in the women’s 100m hurdles with a season’s best 12.71 seconds.

In the field events, Rajindra Campbell placed seventh in the men’s shot put with a best throw of 21.04 metres, while Bryan Levell finished ninth in the men’s 200 metres in 20.44 seconds.
