Health teams have been actively working to track down patients who missed appointments in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, with particular focus on individuals managing chronic conditions.
Despite the disruption caused by the storm, Minister of Health and Wellness Christopher Tufton indicated that the public health system has continued to operate in a way that keeps services within reach for affected communities.
In areas where access to facilities remains a challenge, healthcare workers have been taking services directly to residents through home visits, outreach sessions, and clinics set up in shelters.
Months after the hurricane’s passage, the Western Regional Health Authority reported that 18 out of 20 health centres in Westmoreland are currently operational.
Of the two facilities still out of service, one is nearing readiness to reopen, while the other has been earmarked for complete rebuilding.
Hurricane Melissa caused significant disruption across sections of the parish, impacting access to healthcare services and damaging infrastructure in several communities.
