Scottish giants snap up a second Cavalier FC star during summer transfer window

Jalmaro Calvin will get the opportunity to play alongside his former Jamaica Premier League team-mate in Scotland.

The 22-year-old has followed in the footsteps of Richard King by exiting Cavalier FC on a free transfer to St. Mirren.

King, a pivotal defender for Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz since Steve McClaren took over the reins last year, joined the Scottish Premiership side in June.

The 23-year-old centre back will now have a familiar face at St Mirren, following the announcement of Calvin’s arrival.

Calvin only appeared on St. Mirren’s radar during the club’s scouting mission of King, and has been snapped up on a two-year deal to boost Robinson’s summer revamp.

He bagged 39 goals in 101 appearances for Cavalier FC, primarily playing on the left flank although he can be utilised on the right wing and as a centre forward.

Head coach Stephen Robinson enthused: “We’ve built up a really good relationship with Cavalier FC and their owner Rudolph Speed.

“Jalmaro reminds me of Toyosi Olusanya in terms of that raw pace that he can offer us in the wide areas.”

Olusanya, a London-born striker with Nigerian heritage, spent three seasons with St. Mirren before signing for MLS club Houston Dynamo last April.

Although Calvin was born in Jamaica, he kicked off his career in  Antigua & Barbuda with top-flight side Swetes FC. He joined their Premier Division rivals Ottas Rangers in July 2020, before switching to Cavalier FC in January 2021.

After six months in the Jamaica top tier he was sent on a season-long loan to Ottos Rangers. His two successful campaigns at Cavalier FC earned an international call-up with Antigua & Barbuda.

Calvin started the 1-1 World Cup qualifying stalemate against visiting Bermuda in June 2024. He only appeared for 39 minutes, forced to be substituted after taking a knock on the artificial grass at the ABFA Technical Centre in Piggotts.

He has not played at international level since. Although tackling the Scottish top tier on a regular basis should help bring Calvin back to the attention of Berlin-born Antigua & Barbuda manager Michel Dinzey.
