Prime Minister Andrew Holness Graduates with Doctor of Law and Policy (DLP) from Northeastern University

Andrew Holness was formally conferred with a Doctor of Philosophy (DLP) in Law and Policy at Northeastern University’s commencement ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts.

His dissertation, titled “From the States to the Streets: The impact of US gun laws on gun violence in Jamaica,” was acknowledged during the university’s commencement ceremony, which he attended in person.

The moment has since drawn praise from Jamaicans both locally and overseas.

This follows a previous academic recognition in May 2024, when Holness received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Delaware State University.

He also delivered the commencement address during that ceremony, becoming the first head of government to do so in the school’s 132-year history.

In his remarks at Delaware State, Holness described the personal and financial challenges he faced in his early academic life.

He spoke of using student loans, working part-time, and depending on the support of his parents — his mother, a civil servant, and his father, a small farmer — to complete his studies at the University of the West Indies.

Holness previously attended St Catherine High School in Spanish Town, where he served as head boy and valedictorian.

He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Management Studies and a Master of Science in Development Studies before pursuing his doctoral degree.
