More Jamaicans Head to Canada Under Farm Work Programme
Jamaica’s Overseas Employment Programme, commonly referred to as the Farm Work Programme, continues to deliver opportunities for Jamaicans seeking seasonal employment abroad.
On Tuesday, 95 agricultural workers departed the island for Canada, where they will support the country’s farming operations during the busy harvest period.
According to Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., an even larger group of workers was scheduled to leave the island the following day.
These workers will be deployed to several provinces across Canada to assist with the harvesting of apples and other crops.
The Farm Work Programme has long been a key pillar in Jamaica’s overseas employment initiatives, facilitating the movement of Jamaican labourers to North America to meet critical agricultural demands.
Since the start of 2025, over 5,000 Jamaicans have secured jobs abroad through the Ministry’s efforts, with the Farm Work Programme accounting for a significant share of that figure.
Minister Charles Jr. commended the programme for its far-reaching impact, noting that it not only provides vital employment opportunities for Jamaicans but also plays an essential role in supporting the agricultural needs of partner countries like Canada.
Under the programme, workers typically engage in tasks such as planting, weeding, and harvesting fruits and vegetables.
Many Jamaican farm workers return year after year, with some participating in the programme for decades. The initiative has also proven to be a valuable source of remittances for families back home, contributing to rural development and local economic support.
