JPS Bills to Drop as GCT Cut to 7% Takes Effect

The General Consumption Tax (GCT) on residential electricity has been officially reduced from 15% to 7%, effective May 1, 2025.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness confirmed the implementation in a social media post on Friday.
“EFFECTIVE May 1, 2025, GCT on your residential electricity bill has been REDUCED from 15% to 7%!
“That means real savings for households across Jamaica,” he stated.
He added that while the reduction is now in effect, the savings will not appear on this month’s electricity bills.
However, lower charges are expected in upcoming billing periods.
The measure was first announced during the Jamaica Labour Party’s Annual Conference in November 2024. T
The reduction applies specifically to residential electricity bills.
