Hydel High Shatters Penn Relays Record with Fourth Straight 4x400m Title
Hydel High delivered a dazzling performance on Saturday to close the 129th Penn Relays Carnival, storming to a record-breaking 3:30.42 minutes to win their fourth consecutive High School Girls’ 4x400m Championship of America title.
The team of Natassia Fletcher, Abigail Campbell, Sashana Johnson and Jody-Ann Daley not only claimed victory but obliterated the championship record of 3:32.77 minutes, set by another Hydel quartet in 2022.
Their time now stands as the second fastest ever by a Jamaican under-20 female team, behind only the 3:29.66 minutes national record achieved in 2001 by a group featuring Kerron Stewart, Sheryl Morgan, Melaine Walker and Patricia Hall.
Sixteen-year-old Fletcher got the team off to a strong start with a 53.06-second opening leg, followed by a rapid 52.46 from Campbell.
Johnson maintained the momentum with 52.47 seconds, before Daley anchored the team home in a blistering 52.28 seconds.
Bullis School from Potomac, Maryland, finished second for a second straight year, clocking 3:33.30 minutes – the third fastest time in the event’s history.
Edwin Allen claimed third place with 3:36.14 minutes, recording the 10th best time ever, while Holmwood Technical placed fourth in 3:38.80 minutes.
Immaculate Conception High rounded out the Jamaican finalists with a sixth-place finish at 3:43.17 minutes.
Hydel’s dominance, underscored by the new record, capped a memorable showing for Jamaican teams at this year’s carnival.
