Bailey Nets First Champions League Goal as Villa Take Control Against Club Brugge

Jamaican winger Leon Bailey scored his first Champions League goal as Aston Villa secured a 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in the first leg of their last-16 tie on Tuesday.

Bailey opened the scoring in the third minute at the Jan Breydelstadion, finishing with composure after Tyrone Mings headed down a free-kick.

However, Brugge responded well and levelled through Maxim De Cuyper, making Villa work hard for their advantage.

The Premier League side regained control late in the game when Brandon Mechele inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 82nd minute.

Substitute Marco Asensio then wrapped up the victory with an 88th-minute penalty, marking his fifth goal in four games.

Despite the two-goal cushion, Villa manager Unai Emery cautioned that the tie is not over, with Brugge having already proven their ability at this level by eliminating Atalanta in the play-offs.

Villa will look to complete the job in next Wednesday’s second leg at Villa Park, where a win would see them through to the quarter-finals to face either Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool.
