West Ham and Jamaica forward Michail Antonio is facing a lengthy recovery following a devastating car crash that has left his footballing future in doubt.

The 34-year-old narrowly escaped with his life after his Ferrari collided with a tree in Essex.

It took rescue workers 45 minutes to free Antonio from the wreckage before he was airlifted to hospital, where he underwent surgery for a serious lower-leg fracture.

The injury is believed to be a compound fracture requiring internal fixation, with rehabilitation expected to take nine to 12 months before he can walk unaided.

The poor blood supply to the lower legs is expected to further complicate the healing process, prolonging his recovery.

The severity of the injury raises significant doubts about Antonio’s ability to return to professional football.

Known for his speed and dynamic play, Antonio’s playing style may be heavily impacted by the long-term effects of the injury.

At his age, there is speculation that he may pivot towards a career in coaching to remain involved in football.

Antonio’s contract with West Ham runs until the summer of 2025, with the club expected to continue paying his £90,000-a-week salary during his recovery.

There have been reports suggesting a potential contract extension if he can make a return to the field, though his future remains uncertain.
