Iconic Local Business McIntosh Bedding Co. Closes After 60 Years

McIntosh Bedding Company, a well-known Jamaican wholesaler of mattresses, sleep systems, and bedroom accessories, has announced its closure after more than six decades in business.

Co-founder Donald McIntosh delivered the news, stating, “It is with deep regret that McIntosh Bedding Co Ltd must close its doors.”

The company’s websites and social media platforms have been inactive for several weeks, signalling the end of its operations.

The company, which once held a significant 30 per cent share of the local bedding market and operated branches in Kingston, Mandeville, and Montego Bay, faced persistent financial struggles in recent years.

These challenges were compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, which heavily impacted its operations.

Reflecting on the journey, McIntosh shared, “I founded McIntosh Bedding Co. based on a dream to give people a better way to sleep. Despite our best efforts, we are left with no choice but to say farewell.”

McIntosh expressed gratitude to the many individuals and organisations that contributed to the company’s success over the years, including four generations of staff, suppliers, customers, and international partners. He also acknowledged the unwavering support of his late wife, family, and associates.

“It has been our pleasure serving Jamaica, as we focused on supplying a wide variety of quality products with an emphasis on customer service,” he said.

The closure of McIntosh Bedding marks the end of an era for a company that has played a significant role in Jamaica’s bedding industry since its inception in the early 1970s.
