Reggae Girlz’ Star ‘Bunny’ Shaw Shines Brightly
Jamaica skipper adds coveted PFA accolade to her growing collection of top awards
Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, the Jamaican hot-shot, netted the prestigious Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Women’s Player of the Year in Manchester, England last night.
The Spanish Town-born Manchester City striker enjoyed a spectacular season in the Women’s Super League (WSL), hitting 21 goals in 18 games during the 2023/24 campaign.
Her prowess in front of goal for last season’s WSL runners up, which included a trio of hat-tricks, earned the 27-year-old the WSL Golden Boot award as the league’s leading scorer.
Her latest award was voted for by her fellow professionals. Yet the Jamaican international is no stranger to picking up the accolades and impressing the plaudits, having won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year and the WSL Player of the Year awards in May.
The Reggae Girlz’ skipper has been brilliant in front of goal for Manchester City by finding the back of the net 72 times. Having bagged 22 goals in just 25 matches last term, Shaw surpassed Georgia Stanway’s tally of 67 strikes to become City’s all-time women’s leading scorer.
Although Shaw’s season ended early following ankle and foot injuries in April, and her absence proved to be a big loss as City only finished the season in second place to Chelsea on goal difference, she fended off the challenge of five shortlisted rivals from Chelsea and Manchester City to clinch the coveted PFA award.
Shaw, currently on a pre-season tour with City in Australia, said: “To be recognised in such a way by my peers is a very special honour.
“I want to thank my team-mates and the entire coaching staff [at Manchester City], because without them this wouldn’t be possible.
“I’m both happy and proud to have received this award. To have been voted the player of the year means a lot.”
