Jamaica Ends Paris 2024 Olympics with Six Medals After Baton Mishap in Women’s 4x400m Relay
Jamaica’s participation in the Paris 2024 Olympics concluded on Saturday in disappointment, as the women’s 4x400m relay team dropped the baton during the final race, dashing their hopes of securing another medal.
The Jamaican team, composed of Stacey Ann Williams, Andrenette Knight, Shiann Salmon, and Stephenie Ann McPherson, was in strong contention for a podium finish.
Williams ran an exceptional first leg out of lane eight, handing the baton off in second place to Knight, trailing only behind the United States.
However, disaster struck when Knight, carrying the baton in her right hand, made contact with Ireland’s Rhasidat Adeleke.
The baton appeared to hit Adeleke twice before falling to the track, leaving the Jamaican team in shock and disbelief as they huddled together on the track after the incident.
The United States went on to win the race, setting an American record of 3:15.27 seconds. The Netherlands secured the silver medal with a national record time of 3:19.50 seconds, while Great Britain and Northern Ireland took bronze with a national record of 3:19.72 seconds.
Jamaica, which entered the Olympics with high hopes, ultimately finished with six medals, failing to add to their tally despite competing in six finals over the last two days of the competition.
Nickisha Pryce, who had the fastest time of 48.57 seconds in the 400m going into the Olympics but did not advance from the semifinals, was replaced by Shiann Salmon for the relay final.
