Ernesto,Now a Hurricane – Approaches Bermuda

Tropical Storm Ernesto has intensified into a hurricane north of Puerto Rico, cutting power to 648,676 people in Puerto Rico, according to Luma Energy.

As of Wednesday morning, Ernesto is expected to strengthen further and potentially reach Category 3 status in the coming days.

Forecasters are monitoring its path as it approaches Bermuda, which may be placed under a hurricane watch later today.

The storm is projected to slow near Bermuda, possibly weakening to a Category 2 before speeding northward toward Atlantic Canada early next week.

President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration for Puerto Rico, enabling federal assistance for the island’s recovery efforts.

Ernesto is the fifth named storm of the season, following Hurricane Debby, which impacted Florida, and Hurricane Beryl, a Category 5 storm that caused extensive damage in the Caribbean and Texas.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had forecasted up to 25 named storms this season, driven by elevated sea temperatures and reduced wind shear due to La Niña conditions.
