Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Withdraws from 100m Race in Switzerland Due to Pre-Race Discomfort
Former world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce did not compete in Tuesday’s Spitzen Leichtathletik Luzern – World Athletics Continental Tour – Silver meeting in Switzerland.
This event was set to be Fraser-Pryce’s first international race of the season and her first appearance since finishing third at the Jamaican Championships in June.
She was scheduled to compete in the women’s 100m as part of her preparations for what she has announced will be her fifth and final Olympics at the upcoming Paris Games.
However, Fraser-Pryce withdrew from the race after reporting that she “felt something” during her pre-race warm-ups.
In her absence, Zoe Hobbs from New Zealand won heat one in 11.17 seconds, finishing first overall in the time final.
Swiss athlete Mujinga Kambundji won heat two in 11.20 seconds, placing second overall, while Jamaica’s Kemba Nelson, who finished second in that heat, placed third overall with a time of 11.21 seconds.
Other notable performances included Serena Cole, Shashalee Forbes, and Jodean Williams, who recorded the 5th, 8th, and 9th fastest times respectively.
Cole, finishing second in heat one, clocked 11.24 seconds, while Forbes and Williams both finished in 11.31 seconds.
Krystal Sloley (11.38), Briana Williams (11.50), and Kishawna Niles (11.58) placed 11th, 13th, and 14th overall respectively.
In the men’s 100m, former national champion Rohan Watson (10.32) and Michael Campbell (10.37) finished 9th and 12th overall.
Nigeria’s Ajayi Kayinsola won the event in 10.00 seconds, followed by American Ronnie Baker, who finished second with a time of 10.09 seconds.
