Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Receives Prestigious UWI Alumni Exemplar Sports Award

Dr. The Honorable Mrs. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce OJ, was recently honoured with the University of the West Indies (UWI) Alumni Exemplar Sports Award for 2023.

The accolade, presented at the UWI Gala during the institution’s 75th Anniversary Celebration on Friday night, highlights Fraser-Pryce’s unparalleled achievements in the realm of athletics.

Renowned for her three Olympic gold medals and five 100m world championships, Fraser-Pryce’s enduring legacy is steeped in unwavering discipline, dedication, tenacity, and sportsmanship.

Having been conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws by both the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology, Fraser-Pryce’s impact extends beyond the athletic arena into academia.


She completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Child and Adolescent Development with honours from the University of Technology in 2012.

The Jamaican sprint queen’s trophy cabinet is adorned with numerous awards, including the Golden Cleats Award for Female Athlete of the Year (2009, 2012, 2013, and 2015) and the RJR National Sportswoman of the Year award (2012, 2013, 2015, 2019, and 2022).

Fraser-Pryce’s international recognition culminated in the Laureus World Sports Award for Sportswoman of the Year in 2023, a crowning achievement following nominations in 2010, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

She has also been recognised for her societal contributions, receiving the Order of Distinction, Officer Class, in 2008 and the Prime Minister’s Youth Award for excellence in Sports the same year.

In 2010, she was named the 1st UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Jamaica and the Grace Goodwill Ambassador for Peace.

And in 2014, the Prime Minister of Jamaica bestowed upon her the title of Ambassador at Large for Jamaica.
