Craig Butler’s Mona High Clinches First-Ever Manning Cup Final Berth with Stunning Win Over St. George’s College

Romarion Thomas and Denzel McKenzie Shine in Monumental Victory

On Friday, Mona High School secured their first ever ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup final spot with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over St. George’s College.

Under the guidance of the Craig Butler, the dynamic duo of Romarion Thomas (39th minute) and Denzel McKenzie (56th minute), impressed as Mona down their more fancied rivals.

Despite an early scare with an own-goal by Mona High’s goalkeeper Ackeem Bernard (42nd minute), Butler commended his team’s defensive fortitude, especially in the second half.

Butler, elated after the game, emphasised the importance of intelligence in a team, stating, “It should be a staple for any intelligent team, you have to have that component in your artillery, and we used it well. The boys played out their hearts, and we are totally elated.”

The historic win sets the stage for Mona High to face the winner of the second semi-final between Kingston College and Hydel High.

Mona caused early problems for St. George’s College, but failed to capitalise on half-chances. Romarion Thomas eventually broke the deadlock with a precise finish from a long diagonal ball, marking his ninth goal of the season.

St. George’s College responded three minutes later when Zabir Taylor curled a right-footed effort off the crossbar and then off Bernard to level the score at 1-1.

However, Mona’s determination was evident as they regained the lead in the 56th minute, courtesy of a thumping right-footed freekick from McKenzie.

McKenzie’s 11th goal of the season sealed the historic feat for Mona High, as they defended resolutely in the latter stages of the game to secure the victory.
