World U20 Record Set by Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke Ratified by World Athletics!
Jamaica’s Roshawn Clarke has officially secured his place in athletics history with his remarkable world junior record in the 400m hurdles, set during the semi-finals of the 2023 World Athletics Championships held in Budapest in August.
The record has now been ratified by World Athletics, solidifying his status as a rising star in the world of track and field.
Clarke, at just 19 years old, achieved an extraordinary breakthrough season in 2023, and his journey culminated with a world under-20 (U20) record and an impressive fourth-place finish at the highly competitive World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
The journey of this young talent began with a personal best (PB) time of 49.35 at the 2022 World U20 Championships, where he secured a bronze medal.
In May, Clarke astounded the track and field community by breaking his lifetime best, and the whirlwind continued at the senior Jamaican Championships in July.
During these championships, he demonstrated his remarkable progression by clocking 48.91 in the heats and an astounding 47.85 in the final on July 7th.
The latter time equaled the world U20 record previously set by the USA’s Sean Burrell on June 11, 2021.
However, Clarke’s most outstanding performance was yet to come. At the World Athletics Championships, he showcased his extraordinary talent. After confidently advancing through his heat, he went on to finish second in his semi-final, setting a world U20 record of 47.34.

It’s worth noting that this time would have secured the gold medal at numerous past editions of the World Championships, underlining the magnitude of his achievement.
In the final, which took place just one day later, Clarke continued to impress by finishing in fourth place with a time of 48.07.
