Cheyna Matthews, a forward for the Chicago Red Stars and a key member of Jamaica’s historic Reggae Girlz squad, has announced her retirement from professional football.
The 29-year-old athlete will take the field for her final match this weekend as her team faces OL Reign at the SeatGeek Stadium on Sunday, October 15.
Prior to the match, her club plans to honour her outstanding career.
Matthews, who turns 30 in November, gained international recognition as a member of the Reggae Girlz, contributing to their memorable journey to the round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
She has been a vital part of the Jamaican women’s football program since 2019 and represented the team in two World Cups.
The Jamaica Football Federation expressed their gratitude for Matthews’ remarkable contribution, acknowledging her role in elevating women’s football in Jamaica.
In a statement, they said, “Thank you, Cheyna, for your wonderful service to Jamaica. As you retire from football, we would like to wish you all the best in the next chapter of your life, and you will always be a Reggae Girl.”
Hailing from Clayton County, Georgia, Matthews began her professional career in 2016 when she was drafted seventh overall by the Washington Spirit. She went on to play five seasons with the Spirit before joining Louisville FC in 2021.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Cheyna Matthews reflected on her journey, expressing gratitude for the opportunities and experiences her soccer career provided. She encouraged aspiring athletes to work hard, believe in themselves, treat others with kindness, and never stop learning.
Her post reads as follows:
“My last week playing professionally and I feel so blessed by God that I was able to create a life I love so much through this sport.
I’m just a kid from Clayton County, Georgia with a dream that worked out..
You can truly defy any odds…Work hard and believe in yourself. Treat people well. Never stop learning! Take care of your body!
I don’t want to ramble so I’ll end by thanking every teammate (I’ll miss the locker room the most), coach, medical team, staff member, friend, and fan that has been a part of my journey!
To Jamaica! You healed me. Reggae girlz, I am so glad I’ve gained lifelong sisters in you all. 🇯🇲 It’s been an honor to play alongside each and every one of you. History makers. I love you deep!
To my family! There are no words to express my gratitude and I will never stop working and showing you all how thankful I am for all of the sacrifices through the years. From 2 hour car rides to youth practice, to international travel with 3 kids to see mom play. You all kept my dream alive and well.
I know my babies are ready for mom to be home now. I am ready too. ❤️”
