Reggae Boy Greg Leigh’s Strike Secures Oxford United a Draw Against Blackpool
Reggae Boy Greg Leigh netted his fifth goal of the season to give his club, Oxford United, a 36th-minute lead against a determined Blackpool side over the weekend.
Leigh’s clinical finish from close range came at the end of a well-executed play by the U’s, involving a precise cross from Stan Mills.
The Jamaica international, known for his attacking flair and versatility, escaped his marker at the back post from a free-kick, but he was unable to direct his header past Blackpool’s vigilant goalkeeper, Dan Grimshaw.
However, Leigh made no mistake a few minutes later when he volleyed the ball into the back of the net, breaking the deadlock and sending the home fans into raptures.
The first half of the game saw Oxford United dominating possession with their crisp and precise passing.
Despite their control of the midfield, Blackpool’s defensive discipline denied the U’s many clear-cut opportunities. But Leigh’s strike in the 36th minute would finally reward Oxford for their persistence.
Blackpool, often referred to as the Tangerines, struggled to make an impact in the first half, with their first notable effort on goal coming 10 minutes into the second half when Jordan Rhodes attempted to lob the keeper. Oxford’s shot-stopper, James Beadle, comfortably saved the attempt.
As the match wore on, Blackpool mounted a spirited comeback.
Shayne Lavery had a headed effort go just over the bar, and James Husband couldn’t quite find the target with a header from a corner.
Rhodes, too, had an opportunity but saw his volley go over the crossbar. The Tangerines pressed hard for an equalizer, with Beadle making a crucial save with his legs from a Rhodes effort. However, Rhodes would eventually find the net, securing a valuable point for Blackpool.
In the end, the match concluded with a 1-1 draw, and Greg Leigh’s impressive fifth goal of the season remained a key highlight.
Oxford United’s supporters will undoubtedly be pleased with Leigh’s consistent contributions to the team’s campaign this season.
His ability to make the most of goal-scoring opportunities further underscores his importance to the squad as they continue their journey in the competitive league.
