In a historic turn of events, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Juliet Holness, is poised to ascend to the prestigious position of Speaker as the House reconvenes today at 2:00 pm.

The development comes in the wake of Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert’s sudden resignation as Speaker, which sent shockwaves through Jamaica’s political landscape.

Juliet Holness, the wife of Jamaica’s Prime Minister, is now on the verge of making history by becoming the first prime minister’s spouse to hold the position of Speaker.

Her previous role as Deputy Speaker alongside Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert was already groundbreaking, as it marked the first time in Jamaica’s political history that two women led the lower chamber of Parliament.

Juliet Holness brings with her an impressive political career, having served as a two-term Member of Parliament for St Andrew East Rural.

Her experience and dedication to public service make her a significant figure in Jamaica’s political arena.

The departure of Marisa Dalrymple-Philibert, a four-term Member of Parliament for Trelawny Southern, from the role of Speaker was unexpected.

Her resignation came in the aftermath of a scathing report from the Integrity Commission (IC). The Integrity Commission recommended eight criminal charges against the former Speaker in connection with her statutory declaration filings spanning from 2015 to 2021.
