Jamaican Government Confirms Commitment to Hold Long-Awaited Local Government Elections
Prime Minister Andrew Holness reiterated the Government’s unwavering commitment to conduct the long-overdue local government elections, constitutionally scheduled for February 2024, unless unforeseen events disrupt the process.
Speaking at a media conference in his office, Prime Minister Holness said, the Government is fully intent on upholding the constitutional requirements concerning the local government elections.
He acknowledged that while a date has been set previously and subsequently postponed, the current intention is to fulfill their constitutional duties without further delays.
The local government polls, last held in 2016, witnessed the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) secure a majority in the municipal corporations.
However, since November 2020, the elections have been postponed three times, with the most recent decision pushing the date to February 28, 2024, to allow for sustained economic recovery in the country.
Notably, Leader of the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP), Mark Golding, had issued a warning of legal action against the Holness-led Administration if any future postponements occurred beyond February 2024.
Amidst the PNP’s dissatisfaction with the repeated postponements and concerns expressed by various stakeholders, including business leaders, the Government maintains its focus on conducting the local government elections within the constitutional timeframe.
However, the possibility of unforeseen events, such as exogenous shocks or weather events, remains a factor that could necessitate further consideration.
