Disruption at Sangster Airport: Temporary Runway Closure Affects Over 50 Flights!
Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St. James, experienced a temporary runway closure that impacted more than 50 flights yesterday.
Out of these, 12 flights had to be cancelled, several faced delays, and others were redirected to alternative airports, including Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport.
The closure of the runway was necessitated by safety concerns stemming from ongoing expansion construction work.
The operator of Sangster International Airport, MBJ Airports Limited, stated that the closure lasted approximately 8 hours.
Sharon Hislop-Holt, the Manager of Commercial Development and Marketing, emphasised that safety remained the top priority.
Collaborative assessments with the Civil Aviation Authority were conducted to ensure the runway’s fitness for normal operations.
Passengers affected by the disruption were duly informed by their respective airlines.
They were advised to either await rescheduled flights or arrange for temporary lodging until the following day when alternative flights would be available.
Compensation is expected to be provided to the impacted travelers to mitigate the inconvenience caused by the flight disruptions.
