Haitian Asylum Seekers Await Government Response as Human Rights Attorney Urges Swift Action
Malene Alleyne, a prominent human rights attorney, is intensifying her plea to the government to respond promptly to her asylum request on behalf of 37 Haitian nationals who arrived in Portland illegally earlier this month.
Ms. Alleyne wants the group to have access to fair and effective asylum procedures. Her initial asylum request was submitted on Thursday, July 20, with a stipulated deadline for the government’s response by Friday, July 21.
Despite her efforts, the government has yet to provide an official response to Ms. Alleyne’s request. Frustrated by the lack of communication, she submitted a follow-up letter on Friday, reaffirming the urgency of the situation.
The government has acknowledged receiving the attorney’s request on Friday, but no further action has been taken as of now.
Ms. Alleyne expressed her concerns during an interview with Ka’bu Maat Kheru on Irie Fm’s African Forum on Sunday, highlighting the critical need for the government’s prompt attention to this matter.
In her appeal, Ms. Alleyne called upon the Minister of National Security to address the issue .
Moreover, Ms. Alleyne pointed out that Jamaica must take appropriate steps to ensure that suitable legislation is in place to safeguard the rights and access to asylum for those seeking protection within its borders.
The plight of the Haitian asylum seekers resonates with broader discussions on human rights and immigration policies. As the situation remains unresolved, the government faces mounting pressure to respond promptly to the asylum request in question.
