Fraser-Pryce Withdraws from Botswana’s Golden Grand Prix Season Opener Due to Family Emergency

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Jamaica’s five-time world 100m champion, will not be participating in the Botswana Golden Grand Prix scheduled for April 29 due to a family emergency, according to a statement released by the organizers on Thursday.

Fraser-Pryce was supposed to start her campaign in Africa in preparation for her bid to win a sixth 100m title at the World Championships in Budapest in August.

Despite her disappointment, Fraser-Pryce expressed her gratitude and apologized for the inconvenience caused.

The organisers, in turn, expressed their well-wishes for Fraser-Pryce and her family while also stating that they are currently searching for a replacement athlete for the Women’s 100m race.

In 2022, Fraser-Pryce opened her season in Nairobi, Kenya, with a world-leading time of 10.67.

Throughout the year, she managed to run under 10.70s on seven occasions, including at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she made history by becoming the first running athlete to win five titles in the same event since the championships’ inception in 1983.
