Leon Bailey Linked With EPL Newcomers Leeds United

Author: Neil-Monticelli Harley-Rüdd

Leon Bailey’s escape route from the German Bundesliga to the English Premier League (EPL) has today (August 22) been further fuelled with a potential move to Leeds United.

The 23-year-old Jamaican midfielder, who has employed a London-based agent to speed up a switch to the EPL, was in London last weekend and is now being heavily linked with a trio of top tier clubs comprising Everton, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur.

France’s Eurosport has claimed that Leeds United have tabled a proposal for Bailey, but didn’t reveal the price that the EPL newcomers have offered his Bayer Leverkusen club.

The Kingston-born winger, who has admitted that his form has been indifferent over the past 20 months, has another three years left to run on his Leverkusen contract after making the move to the Bay Arena in the 2017 January transfer window from Belgian top-flight side Genk.

Leeds United, who have aspirations to annually fight for a place in the Champions League, are eager to strength their squad under former Argentina national coach Marcelo Bielsa. He has just failed with a bid to sign winger Ryan Kent from Glasgow giants Rangers and is believed to be eager to add Bailey to his ranks.

Bailey, who has made it blatantly clear that he no longer sees eye-to-eye with Leverkusen head coach Peter Rosz, has enlisted the same agent as Jamaican-born football star Raheem Sterling in a desperate bid to compete in the EPL.

However, Bailey’s current value is estimated to be hovering around a seemingly high price of US$33m, a third of his transfer value just two years ago, so any leading club would be clearly taking a gamble on splashing the cash on an out-of-form player.

Biesla is renowned for polishing players, and last term helped turn Leeds-born defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips into arguably the best player in England outside the EPL. Phillips is wanted by England for their World Cup campaign, but he is also desired by the Jamaica Football Federation to tackle the CONCACAF qualifiers for Qatar 2022 where he could line-up alongside Bailey.
