Former Reggae Boy Helps Kick-Off BAME Scheme In English Football
Darren Moore, the former Jamaican international, has announced that there will be a new scheme introduced to increase the number of BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) coaches to English football.
The 46-year-old British-born manager of English Championship ouftit Doncaster Rovers is one of just half-a-dozen of the 91 English Premier League (EPL) and English Football League (EFL) head coaches or managers that are BAME.
The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) have joined forces with both the EFL and EPL to kick-off a new scheme next season, which will offer six coaches a 23-month work placement at EFL clubs. The aim is to help BAME players move into full-time coaching roles within the professional game, with PFA members encouraged to apply regardless of their age or experience.
Those interested must be willing to take the FA Advanced Youth Award and undertake both panel and individual club interviews.
Jointly funded by the EPL and the PFA, the scheme offers bursaries to each participant from the placement club. The criteria for candidates is a minimum of a UEFA B qualification with commitment to earning a UEFA A coaching licence.
Moore, who represented Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz three times during the 1999-2000 season, said in his role as chair of the EFL’s black participants’ advisory group: “We all know and agree that the diversity of coaches and managers must increase and this placement scheme represents a positive step.
“There are lots of roles in the academy system, all the way through to first team, and young coaches can slot in at different points to begin that journey.
“We need to have the right structures and people in place to develop their careers. I know from my own experiences the value of strong support throughout the coaching journey.”
