Bolt, Thompson Shortlisted For IAAF’s World Athlete of the Year Awards

On Wednesday (November 9), Jamaican athletes Usain Bolt and Elaine Thompson made the shortlists for the IAAF’s World Athlete of the Year awards – 2016.

This unexpected development follows sensational feats by both athletes at the most recent Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Bolt, who has already won the award on five occasions, became the first person in history to win three consecutive 100 and 200 meters Olympic gold medals at the Rio Games in August.

He also boasts world records in the two disciplines with times of 9.58 seconds and 19.19 seconds, respectively.

Thompson completed a rare sprint double at the Rio Games by winning gold in the 100m (with a time of 10.71 s) and the 200m (21.78 s), becoming the first female sprinter to do so since Florence Griffith Joyner at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.

The finalists were selected by the IAAF Council, the IAAF Family and the public vote via social media.
