Statues of Four Jamaican Olympians to Be Erected
For years many Jamaicans have expressed their desire to see a statue of Usain Bolt erected on the island.
And calls for a sculpture of the world’s fastest man to be erected have only increased following his incredible feats at the recently concluded Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In August of this year, Bolt became the first person in history to complete the ‘triple-triple’, after winning 3 gold medals in the 100, 200 and 4x100m events at three consecutive Olympic games.
During a recent interview, Bolt revealed that that he would like to see his statue erected in his hometown of Falmouth.
Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender Affairs, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, has now revealed that statues of four Jamaican Olympians are to be erected.
Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Asafa Powell and Veronica Campbell-Brown are all slated to have statues of their likeness erected.
According to The Gleaner, Grange stated:
“The ministry will commission four statues over the next two years for the following athletes – Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Asafa Powell,” said Grange.
“The first two statues of Usain and Shelly-Ann will be completed in time for the Jamaica 55 Independence celebrations next year and the other two statues of Veronica Cambell-Brown and Asafa Powell for the following year,”
