Haiti’s Death Toll Passes 800, Expected to Rise

Haiti has suffered more than its fair share of catastrophes in recent times.

In 2010, the country was violently shaken by a magnitude 7 earthquake that claimed as many as 316,000 lives according to some estimates.

On Tuesday (October 4), the nation was impacted Hurricane Matthew, a category 4 storm at the time.

Jamaica was initially projected to receive the brunt of the hurricane, but the powerful storm eventually turned eastwards and pummeled much of Haiti’s eastern tip.

The most recent death toll in the Caribbean nation now stands at 842, but is still expected to rise after communication is established with remote parts of the island.

According to Reuters, there is limited food available and at least seven persons have already died of cholera.
It is also estimated that 350,000 people are currently in need of humanitarian assistance.
