Harvard University Offers Jamaican Patois Course

Jamaican Patois at Harvard University!

Jamaican Patois, known locally as Patois (Patwa or Patwah) and called Jamaican Creole by linguists, is an English-based creole language with West African influences.

It is primarily spoken in Jamaica and the Jamaican diaspora but continues to be emulated by persons from various nations across the globe.

Though standard British English is used for most writing in Jamaica, Jamaican Patois has been gaining ground as a literary language for close to a century.

It should therefore, not be too uprising that one of the world’s most prestigious universities – Harvard University offers a course on Jamaican Patois.

Only offered when students demonstrate academic need, Harvard describes the course as an:

“Individualized study of Jamaican Patois at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels.”

The course is taught by Genesee Johnson, and explores the elementary, intermediate and advance levels of the Patois language.
