UWI Lecturer Encourages Jamaicans to Prepare For Powerful Earthquake
While speaking at an awareness sessions for stakeholders in the construction industry at the Bureau of Standards recently, a Lecturer in the Department of Physics at the University of West Indies, Dr. Victor Douse, stated that there is a strong possibility that a very big earthquake could hit Jamaica sooner or later.
The professor stated:
“Because these faults exist, there is a strong possibility that an earthquake will ensue. In fact, I spoke whit an expert at the earthquake unit recently, and I asked him about the recent activities over the past year and he said there has been little or no activities….and that’s significant and troubling also, because when the faults move and you feel that tremor, the energy is released. But he’s saying now…for a while, we’ve had only a few earthquakes…it means that a lot of energy is being built up and so, what we find is that sooner of later, Jamaica is in for a very big shake, and that’s fearful.”
“So I say this to make it a part of the awareness principle that we must understand that we are negatively, uniquely located and the truth is we have to make sure that our building structures, our civil engineering structures are built from sound compliant materials,” he also stated.
