T&T PM to Visit Jamaica in Bid to Quell Immigration Dispute
Dr Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, and Prime Minister Andrew Holness have reportedly agreed to bring to an end the ongoing dispute between both countries concerning immigration.
Their has been heightened tension between the two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states following the decision of Port of Spain to deport a number of Jamaicans whom they said would have been a charge on the state for their stay in Trinidad – having shown no means of sustaining themselves while in the country.
“The Jamaican Prime Minister and I agreed that the time has come that this matter be put to bed by the voice of T&T speaking directly to the people of Jamaica. I propose to do so myself,” Rowley told reporters at a press conference on the weekend upon his return from Cuba where he attended the summit of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS).
The issue also triggered callas for Jamaicans to boycott all Trinidadian products.
A report by the Trinidad Guardian stated that at least one Trinidadian manufacturer eventually had his goods pulled by a supermarket owner in Jamaica.
Monday’s edition of the Trinidad Guardian newspaper, states that Dr. Rowley plans to pay an official visit to Jamaica “in the not-too-distant future” to address the long standing issue.
