Breaking: Zika Virus Reaches Haiti!

The Chikungunya virus ravaged the island in 2014 and many persons are still reeling from its effects.

On Thursday the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) confirmed the first case of the disease in Haiti.

According to the CMC: PAHO’s Communicable Disease and Health Analysis director Marcos Espinal, also warned that there are many people who will contract Zika without knowing it.

“The Zika virus isn’t a cause to go crazy. The diagnosis is for monitoring. The main thing here is to control the vectors (mosquitoes). The virus shouldn’t cause alarm among the population.”

The virus, first discovered in 1947 causes a disease known as Zika fever in humans.

Some of the symptoms of Zika virus infection include, a low grade fever, rash, arthralgia, notably of small joints of hands and feet, with possible swollen joints, myalgia (pain in a muscle or group of muscles), and headache.

Symptoms usually appear following the incubation period of  three to 12 days and typically last for four to seven days.

Like Chik-V, there is no specific vaccine or treatment fr the Zika virus.
