JPS Pulls Down Almost 10,000 illegal Power Connections So Far in 2015
The Jamaica Public Service Co. (JPS) already removed almost 10,000 illegal connections to their power supply this year and over 300 persons have also been arrested for theft in 2015.
Collaboration between the JPS and members of the security forces, resulted in the arrest of 304 persons.
In a statement released over the weekend, JPS stated it is “relentlessly pursuing” electricity thieves in neighborhoods where a tangle of illegal wires can often be seen tapping into power lines.
According to the power company, JPS crews have already pulled down 9,512 throw-up lines this year.
In the St. Catherine community of Windsor Heights in Central Village, residents fled their homes last week to avoid arrest as power crews removed about 850 illegal connections.
Jamaica’s government has almost 20 percent ownership of JPS.
