Sizzla
Controversial dancehall artiste Miguel ‘Sizzla Kalonji’ Collins will appear before the Yallahs Resident Magistrate’s Court on February 18, to answer a charge of using indecent language.
According to reports, Sizzla reacted angrily when police turned off a sound system at a night club in South Haven, Yallahs just days ago after it was deemed to be operating beyond the lock off time. Sizzla reportedly turned the system back on, then hurled expletives in the direction of the cops, who responded by seizing the equipment. Then when Sizzla showed up at the Yallahs Police Station later the same day to retrieve the seized equipment, he was served with a summons to attend court.
Bunny Rugs
The Reggae world has lost another of its patriarchs after Third World lead singer, William ‘Bunny Rugs’ Clarke passed away recently after a long battle with leukemia. Clarke, who was set to turn 66 last Thursday, passed away at his home in Orlando, FL, according to friends and colleagues of the singer. A week earlier, he was in hospital receiving treatment for the cancerous disease and had been in intensive care. Regarded as one of the most profound and distinct voices in Reggae music history, Clarke started his career at just 15 years old and worked with popular Reggae band, Inner Circle as well as prominent producer, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. The Mandeville-born artist then became a member of Third World, one of the most popular Reggae bands in history, spending 31 years with the group. While part of the group, they issued classics such as Now That We Found Love, Always Around, Committed and Try Jah Love, the latter co-written alongside legendary American singer, Stevie Wonder, who performed with the band at Reggae Sunsplash in 1981.Those songs and others were chart-toppers in several countries, particularly gaining acclaim on American and British singles charts. The band, which also featured the likes of Michael ‘Ibo’ Cooper, Stephen ‘Cat’ Coore, Colin Leslie and many more, dropped several hit albums while signed to Island Records including 96 Degrees of Shade (1977), Journey To Addis (1978) and received six Best Reggae Album Grammy nominations for later projects such as Serious Business, Committed, Live It Up and Ain’t Givin’ Up, though they never emerged with an Grammy Award.
Tommy Lee Sparta
Reports are that dancehall artiste Tommy Lee Sparta is still in police custody after he was reported hauled in by law enforcement authorities recently. Unconfirmed reports are that Tommy was a part of a group arrested by police for alleged scamming. A source close to the deejay tells E Zone that Tommy Lee Sparta remains in police custody but has not been slapped with any charges.
Vybz Kartel
The main prosecution witness in the Vybz Kartel murder trial was recently shown photographs from which he identified the entertainer. The witness also identified co-accused Shane Williams who he said he knew as ‘Terrence’; Andre St John and another man as ‘Mad Puss’. Reports are that witness also identified Kartel in several voice notes issuing threats if he did not get back his “two new shoes”. The judge then asked what he meant by shoes and the witnesses responded that Kartel was referring to two guns. The witness has also testified that he and Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams were taken in a taxi to Kartel’s Havendale house where the entertainer questioned them about two missing guns and that they were attacked and he saw Williams lying motionless on the living room floor of the house. The prosecution has so far called 24 witnesses at the trial, which began in November last year and is said to be one of the longest criminal trials in a circuit court in Jamaican history. The prosecution has submitted text messages, video footage and messages allegedly taken from a BlackBerry smartphone supposedly belonging to Kartel.
Popcaan
Dancehall entertainer Andre ‘Popcaan’ Sutherland will stand trail on June 5 for allegedly assaulting a policeman last year. Allegations are that the Unruly Rave deejay assaulted a policeman while at the Norman Manley International Airport on Monday, November 25, 2013. He is charged with assault occasioning bodily harm but pleaded not guilty.
Kiprich
Dancehall Artiste Kiprich , recently completed the video shoot for his latest single “Smart Phone”. Smart Phone is an exclusive produced by Outta Road Records that has been gaining traction both on the local and international airwaves. “I have Great Expectations for this single. The shoot went well, It’s a great concept and it was well executed and all I have to say is look out for this video” Kiprich said in a recent interview with E Zone The video “Smart Phone” is set to be released by end of February.
Jah Cure
The video for Jah Cure’s latest single Wake Up has been doing well. The video was directed by Shanka. It was shot on location at various communities between St. Ann and Kingston. The track has been released digitally and physically on multiple various artiste compilations including Strictly the Best 49 by VP Records, The Hit List Vol. 4 by Tad’s Record and Sweet Personality Riddim, Jah Cure’s message comes with the solution for Jah children. The video is now in rotation on television channels and is available on YouTube where it has racked up over 36,000 views in less than a week.
E Zone International
Reports are that singer Selena Gomez checked into The Meadows in Arizona last month and spent two weeks having treatment before departing the facility, but it has now been revealed she had been enrolled in the six weeks long DAWN (Drug Abuse Warning Network) programme and staff at the clinic advised her to see out the whole course of treatment. Selena, who was reportedly being treated for alcohol, marijuana and prescription drug use, checked out to attend the Sundance Film Festival to promote her movie ‘Rudderless’ and told her advisers she would return to the clinic afterwards. However, according to international sources she then decided she was ”cured” and had no reason to return.
